PARD Therapeutic Riding

What a wonderful way to spend an evening! We welcome volunteers all year round - for program nights, special events, horse care and more! Come out for a visit.

PARD Therapeutic Riding is a Peterborough area charitable organization that has provided a riding program for over 25 years to individuals with varying disabilities and ages. Disabilities may include, but are not limited to: cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, visual or hearing challenges, stroke and intellectual challenges.

PARD does not have any paid staff, therefore, we rely solely on dedicated volunteers that give hours of their time every week to raise funds, public awareness, operate the program and care for the horses.

PARD does not receive government funding and is financially dependent on support from the local community, businesses, service clubs and fund-raising events. In today’s economic times, this has proven to be an on-going challenge for the volunteers to raise sufficient funds to keep the program operating.

Using the abilities of the rider, PARD provides individualized riding instruction. The “three-dimensional” motion of a walking horse mimics human walking and stimulates the rider, providing many benefits. When a rider is on their horse, their challenges “appear to disappear and they can do things that are normally beyond their abilities. The benefits of therapeutic riding are; • Improved balance • Development of coordination • Mobilization of trunk & pelvis • Strengthening of muscles • Normalization of muscle tone • Prevention of contractures • Increased confidence & self-esteem • Improved attention span • Promotion of independence • Improved social integration • Access to recreation sport and/or competition.

Lessons are one half hour in length, are run by certified instructors and each rider is assisted by as many as 3 volunteers. The role of the volunteer is to provide physical & emotional support to the rider. Each horse has a lead person & 1 or 2 side-walkers dependent upon the degree of the rider’s abilities.

Our program operates at 1372 Fourth Line Road, South Dummer, Douro-Dummer, ON

As volunteers, we are part of this amazing organization to see the smile of the rider every week and to feel part of their happiness and accomplishments. Help us, help them achieve one of their many dreams.
